Rob Lowe says his 1988 sex tape is 'the best thing that ever happened' to him
In 1988, when Rob Lowe was just becoming a teen sensation, a sex tape featuring him and two women - one of whom was underage - was leaked to the press, leading many to assume it was the end of his fledgling career.
Lowe had met the two women, Lena Jan Parsons and Tara Seburt, at an Atlanta nightclub, later driving them to his room at a nearby Hilton where he then filmed their sexual encounter.
When the tape was leaked soon after, it was found that Parsons was just 16, which Lowe claimed he was not aware of at the time. Lowe, now 55, settled a lawsuit with Parsons' family and was never charged.
Despite the controversy and while promoting his new stage show Stories I Only Tell My Friends: LIVE!, Lowe admitted this week on The Jess Cagle Show that he doesn't regret it.
"Any time you're doing a memoir or a book, a show about your life, job one is authenticity and full transparency," he said. "There can't be like, 'Oh there's that one area that I won't talk about.' You can't do that. So that's in (the show). My whole life is there."
In fact, he added, it helped him get his life together: "It's one of the reasons why I got sober. I woke up one day and I was like, 'What am I doing with my life?' I'm 29 years in and like people talk, but it's the best thing that ever happened to me."
Lowe, who is married to Sheryl Berkoff with whom he shares sons Matthew and John, said, "It got me sober, sober got me married. I've been married 29 years and I have two great sons. I don't think any of that happens without going through that scandal."
By the way, although Lowe believes he "invented" the sex tape, he "didn't make any money off of it like everybody does now."
A true shame.
